Many of our customers prefer shelled sunflowers because they leave less mess and seem to require fewer feeder fillings! Shelled sunflowers offer the highest protein and fat content, making an excellent source of food year round, but especially in cold winter months when high energy seeds are needed.
Got a lot of hungry birds? I have a number of feeders that attract so many birds I sometimes consider calling the police for the noise (no, not really). I have about 75 goldfinches that come regularly during the winter (do I see that many in summer when they’re pretty yellow? Nooooo!), myriad chickadees and tufties, house finches, nuthatches, and other little guys who like sunflower chips better than sunflower in shell. Birds and critters love them! I make these go a little farther by mixing other things in. I mix it in with store-bought bags of bird seed mixture along with bags of cracked corn(inexpensive), to make my money go a little farther. After years of buying bags of in-shell black oil sunflower seeds, which make an added mess once the birds shell them, I decided to buy these shelled seeds and i am very happy to have switched. I feed hundreds of birds daily, such as Mourning Doves, Quail, and all the sparrows and such (also Hawks) through the cold and snowy winter, going through about 2…
Good Quality Bird Seed I mix cracked corn, shelled sunflower seeds, and peanut pieces to make a relatively mess-free seed for my back yard feeder. I bought this from a local wild life sanctuary that had twice a year sales. They stopped last year and I’ve been buying the seed from Amazon instead. It’s slightly more costly, but far more convenient. It looks like 80 Lbs. of cracked corn, 100 Lbs. of shelled sunflower, and 30 Lbs. of peanut pieces will last me through the season with my one feeder that takes about 10…
