Safflower seed is a cardinal favorite! High in fat, protein and oil content, safflower is a valuable nutrition source for wild birds. Chickadees, titmice, nuthatches and grosbeaks are also attracted to safflower seed. Squirrels typically leave safflower seed alone and will only eat it if there is nothing else available. A black oil sunflower seed bird feeder will work for safflower seed. However, cardinals are ground-feeding birds so try a platform feeder.
