Safflower Seed Backyard Bird Feed Safflower seed is slightly smaller than sunflower seed, but are high in protein, fat and fiber. Birds that regularly feed on safflower seeds are Black-capped chickadees, Blue-jays, Downy Woodpeckers, mourning doves, Northern Cardinals, Purple Finches Safflower seeds have a bitter flavor typically blackbirds, grackles and many squirrels will avoid safflower seeds.
