RED FOOD DYE CAN POISON HUMMINGBIRDS The red dye (FDA #40) used in this (and all other hummingbird foods) is made from coal tar. Think about it. The amount of red dye consumed by a hummingbird is huge, like you drinking a 10 gallon jug. While there are no definative studies on the effects of red dye on humans (or hummingbirds) the amount consumed by hummingbirds versus humans is hundreds if not thousands of times greater. This is going back as soon as it’s delivered! My husband ordered this product along with a new hummingbird feeder. $15 for four cups of sugar!!! Plus it contains red dye! The liquid you place in a hummingbird feeder does not have to be red–the dye is not good for them. All you need is a feeder that has some red on it and they will find it. Make your own
