  1. Exquisite water color plates of NZ birds! This is a compact, sturdy, beautifully-designed, albeit pricey [indeed!] field-worthy bird guide. It provides excellent field information for most all New Zealand species. The Derek Onley plates are such exquisite and unique water-color renderings that many, as separate prints, would surely be worthy of framing. This lovely and highly informative NZ bird guide deserves 5 stars, in my opinion, both because of its easy field utility and as a natural history book-collector’s acquisition.

  2. Best available Except for a few recent vagrants, this field guide thoroughly covers the birds of New Zealand: well-illustrated with good descriptions and fine distribution maps, a good index, island maps on the inside covers and a waterproof jacket. The guide also devotes six pages to the key places to visit in New Zealand. I was surprised at its small size 6″ x 8.8″ x 0.5″, but then pleased with how much is packed into a book that is easy to carry in the field.

  3. looks the perfect bird guide for travelling Handy and at the same time exhaustive, looks the perfect bird guide for travelling!
