The definitive guide to identifying Australian birds. the definitive and most respected guide to Australian bird identification, this book is a must for both experts and amateurs. First published in 1980, Graham Pizzey’s Field Guide to the Birds of Australia combines a depth and breadth of knowledge with beautiful, full-colour illustrations by Frank Knight. Comprehensive and fully updated, this 9th edition of the Guide is more user-friendly than ever before. Species entries have been re-ordered and updated to reflect the new taxonomy, and the book has been expanded to include eighteen new species as well as a new section on vagrant species. It also features new information on bird family groups, more than 750 distribution maps based on the most recent bird atlas data, as well as a new Quick Find Index, to assist with quick identification of birds in the field. this is the essential reference for every bird enthusiast.
Ok but prefer Morcombe Bought this for a recent trip thinking I would use it as the definitive reference and my old Morcombe (compact edition) as a pocket reference to take into the field. Wound up using just Morcombe because it has more illustrations, more detail, better illustrations while being more compact. Morcombe’s names are out of date in some cases but overall it is the better book. I wound up leaving this new Pizzey and Knight in a lodge since it was just dead weight in my luggage. It’s probably a fine…
Will be a good reference before I go but probably to large to … Seems very complete, with lots of pictures of each bird. Maps and description helpful for someone not from Australia. Book is over 600 pages so it is heavy, and large (much larger than a field guide). Will be a good reference before I go but probably to large to carry with me.
Fantastic new edition I am really enjoying this field guide. It is a bit bigger than some of my others, but WELL WORTH it because the illustrations show many more variations in plumage for non-breeding, juvenile, in flight and some morphs, than a lot of the other field guides.
