Birds of Northern California

David Quady and his nationally acclaimed fellow authors have written text for the over 390 species of birds that are found from Monterey County to the northern border of California in our best-selling format: Description, Similar Species, Seasonal Abundance, Where to Find, Habitat, Diet and Behavior, Voice and Did You Know. More than 500 photographs illustrate species, often in different plumages. The photos have been selected and reviewed by the team of authors for regional accuracy. Two maps illustrate key birding spots and the northern California habitats. A Quick Guide to Local Birds, at the front of the book, provides an easy reference to the pages that provide a complete description of the different birds. A ten page habitat section introduces the sixteen unique geographic regions that support the bird diversity of northern California and highlight the importance of habitat conservation.

  1. Fave book to take in the field If you like birding in northern CA, this book is awesome! Smaller size easily fitsin a coat or fleece pocket without the weight of larger book. The easy format and stellar photos make this our fave bird book. (No more weeding thru the flamingos and eastern birds that aren’t in our area!) I also researched various books and respected the authors’ credentials.

  2. Great Photos and Information I’m not a birder but my husband and I take lots of hikes and we enjoy watching and identifying local birds. This is a helpful book with good photos and interesting “Did you know?” sections. While walking at Lake Temescal recently we spotted an unfamiliar bird with a heron-like shape. I whipped out our book and learned it was a Green Heron. Great fun!

  3. Great Book on Northern California Birds Easy to use. Excellent full color photos of both male and female birds. Informative text about description, range, behavior of birds.
