Texas birdlife is strongly influenced by the incredible diversity of habitats found within its borders. The Rio Grande corridor is a great example of this diversity. From El Paso to Brownsville, this once-majestic river forms the 1,569-mile southern and western borders of Texas. At El Paso, the average rainfall is only nine inches per year compared to the 26-inch annual rainfall ofthe subtropical Lower Rio Grande Valley. In between can be found the magnificent Chihuahuan Desert with its mountain islands, the Stockton and Edwards Plateaus, and the brush-covered plains of South Texas.

Outdated for many sites This book is quite out of date. It is the 4th edition, released in 2008. Amazon site says it is 4th edition and dated it Nov 2018. That is wrong. I only realised that it was a very old edition (it has not been updated since 2008) when I received the book. The Rio Grande flooded in 2010 due to Hurricane Alex, and that has changed the birding landscape significantly in many of the sites near the river. For example, ferruginuous pygmy owls are no longer seen at Bentsen Rio Grande, according…
The scoop on all the best places to go Was surprised by the reviews complaining about no pictures. This is not a bird ID book. This is a bird location book and it delivers on just that. After buying this book, I took a trip to the lower Rio Grande Valley and used the guide to find places, including specific areas within parks, to find the birds I wanted to see. I saw 165 species in 7 days, including 24 I’ve never seen before. (I’ve been a birder for 4 years and have to been to the LRGV once before for a 24 hour period).
Very comprehensive, fairly up to date guidebook Very comprehensive guidebook to the Rio Grande valley from New Mexico to the Gulf of Mexico. Fairly recently revised (2008), but I expect some surprises in the region, given the current political climate along the border. I will be visiting soon and will use this book as a guide. Since it offers so many opportunities for finding the local specialties, I expect to be able to adjust my itinerary to make the trip enjoyable and successful, despite the tensions and the limitations they may make…
