I contacted a Scotts representative who informed me that the use of pesticides to protect these seeds from insects was discontinued in 2008 and treated seeds were recalled as part of the legal proceedings. No pesticides are currently used in the processing of these seeds. But if you’ve ever bought it from a farm and seed supply place or any other place where you get this quantity you will always have “extras” in with the seeds. I had been told that it helps the birds beak’s. My feeders have no problem with the “extras”.
