Needs to be immobile for it to work. Beat the squirrels after a little work. The action of the unit works as described and does a great job of locking them out. My over-achieving squirrels came up with a plan to jump on it from the side which still caused the unit to close but also started it to swing. Once they jumped away it will swing a few times but since the squirrel was not on it anymore the food would fall to the ground.
