Mixed Seed is also popular. It is best to buy the mixes that contain white proso millet, a tiny cream colored seed with a shiny shell. Mixes containing finely cracked corn and black oil sunflower are also preferred by a large number of birds.
Nyger (Thistle Seed) is imported from Africa and Asia. Nyger won’t germinate, however, it has a tendency to become moldy due to lack of air circulation. If you notice mold on the seed, it must be removed from the feeder and the feeder must be cleaned thoroughly.

A. Before filling your feeder with fresh seed, it is recommended that the following precautions are taken:
Remove all old seed. Soak feeder in a light water/bleach solution (9 parts water to 1 part bleach). Scrub feeder and allow to air dry. Rake and remove accumulated hulls and droppings from underneath the feeders. Spread mulch (bark or wood) under the feeder, replace mulch when soiled. Thoroughly wash hands after handling and cleaning feeders.

Perfect for Bird Lovers My feeder came assembled, so I cannot offer feedback on that. I will say:
Water infiltration I ordered and setup both this bird feeder and a Brome 1024 on separate arms but they were next to each other. After a few days, the birds were fighting each other to get shelled sunflower seeds from the Brome but few were interested in the Perky-Pet. After a couple of weeks and about three refills for the Brome, I took down the Perky-Pet to check it out. The tension on the anti-squirrel lock was good but the seeds on the edge where the birds get them had become wet and waere all stuck…
Definitely squirrel proof! I bought this for my 82 year old neighbor who doesn’t get out of her apartment much and I perched it right outside her living room window. She is entertained by watching squirrels attempt to climb the pole it is on and hang upside down trying to get to the birdseed and for the past six months, none of them have been able to get into it. The red color and design also attracts a lot of comments from jealous neighbors. I’m definitely happy with my purchase and it was worth every penny.
