The Young Birder’s Guide to Birds of North America (Peterson Field Guides)

Covering 300 of the most common birds in all of the United States and Canada, The Young Birder’s Guide to Birds of North America is loaded with color photographs, drawings showing typical behaviors, range maps, an easy-to-use checklist, fun facts, and authoritative information about each bird, its vocalizations, and its habitat.

While other field guides might overwhelm kids who are new to birding, The Young Birder’s Guide to Birds of North America was created with help from kids. Bill Thompson’s own son and daughter and their elementary school classes helped select the content. Kid tested, kid approved!

  1. Excellent guide with one caveat this is an excellent guide which is easy to follow. My only complaint is that is not clear what order the birds are listed in – it is not alphabetical, or by color, but just seems random, which means you have to page through the entire book to try to find a bird. There must be some system but they do not say anywhere what the system is. I have looked in the “how to use this book” section and read the foreward etc, but it doesn’t seem to say anywhere.

  2. Wonderful For Young Birders Of Any Age I’ve been reading field guides to birds for about fifty years. Bill Thompson’s “Young Birder’s Guide to Birds of North America” is, without question, the best I’ve seen for beginning birders. I’ve purchased one for my granddaughter and another for a family of young nieces. I’m quite sure that they are not the last.

  3. Birding for Kids I really like this guide. It is simple but has enough information to be useful. It has neat tips which adds to the interest factor. The photos are clear and catch the special qualities of each species. The size of the book , light and compact, makes it great for hikes and birding trips. It even fits in a baggie, which makes it a nice addition to a canoe trip. There is nothing babyish about this book. It has solid information and technique that can be used by anyone. I highly recommend it.
